The hottest street art scene takes place in the backyard of the Florentine neighborhood – the “canvas of Tel Aviv”.
The street gallery changes every night. Walls get filled with freestyle works, and a discourse is created between the walls and the street art community, which is not afraid to express its uncensored opinions about Israeli society, government and the media.
Many consider street art to be vandalism, dirt on the walls, destruction of property and sometimes, simple ugliness, but when you understand the process in which the artists create their works, choose their images and combine them with the appropriate texts, each work attains a deeper and more significant message than might, at first, be apparent. Nowadays, these artists are recognized by the higher artistic institutions, who display their works in gallery and museum spaces.
On this tour, we will understand the visual language and get to know the various styles that have developed, the most famous of the artists in the local community and the overseas “guests” who have also left their mark on the neighborhood; through the most unique and up-to-date works in the area, we will understand why the street art community has decided to focus on this part of the city specifically.
The tour will commence at the renewing neighbourhood of Florentine, where Gentrification changes the rules of the game- through the colourful walls decorating the streets, in order to understand better the definitions between vandalism and street art. From there, we will continue into the laneways of Florentine’s graffiti covered factories and workshops. we will end out tour at the first Israeli Street Art Gallery of this neighborhood.
There is a street art workshop available immediately after the tour, which can serve as a way for a group to sum up the tour in the context of Israeli street art and graffiti or privet tours in a fun unforgettable adventure of becoming street-artists yourself.
